Fall Bucket List

Crowder's Mountain, NC

Goodbye frose, hello pumpkin spice! After Labor Day, everyone’s mind instantly shifts over to fall. Even us Southerners start thinking about sweater weather, leaves changing, and carving pumpkins with 90-degree weather outside! Regardless of when the weather begins to cool down, you can already start enjoying some of your favorite fall activities. Below are my top 10 Must Do Fall Activities!

1. Go Apple Picking

Search for a Local Orchard at the very beginning of September. Apple season can begin early depending on the season and crop. Pick a bushel and treat yourself to some homemade caramel apples afterwards! If you’re in the SC/NC region, I recommend going to Windy Hill to pick your own Apples. They make their own Hard Cider and have flights available for purchase. You can make an entire day out of it if you go on a Saturday – start with U-Pick Apples, grab lunch at one of the food trucks, then hang out and listen to the live music & enjoy the freshly made hard cider.

2. Tailgate for a Football Game

There is absolutely nothing like College Football in the South. We are diehard believers in our team and will do anything to show our support. As a University of South Carolina Alumni, it is always nice to go back to campus, reconnect with old friends, and come together to support our Gamecocks! Tailgating can be an all-day event (some may even consider it a hobby)! If you’re looking for an easy way to tailgate, stop at Bojangles for a Bo Box. If you’re a true tailgater, you’ll have the full set up with a truck, TV, Grill, pot luck homemade goodies, and lots of beer!

3. Go for a Hike

There is no better way to enjoy the leaves changing than to go for a hike in the mountains during the fall. A nice cool breeze… a rewarding view at the top… whats not to love! If you’re like me and work a 9-5 every day, spending some time outside is very much needed. Crowders Mountain is just 30 minutes from Uptown Charlotte so it’s a great afternoon activity for me!

4. Enjoy smores over a bonfire

Growing up, my friends and I always smelled like firewood smoke! We would have bonfires almost every night. There’s something about that campfire feel that brings everyone together. Mix up the classic smore by adding some twists – chocolate graham crackers, caramel salted chocolates, peanut butters, and more!

5. Make a Badass Halloween Costume

Raise your hand if you start thinking of costume ideas on November 1st (365 days before next year’s Halloween)! If you want something original, start planning early. Every time I wait until the last minute I always end up with something cliché or half assed. Check out this Pinterest Board from Goodwill with tons of DIY Costume Ideas. Last year we made Raven's Costumes (from One Tree Hill)!

6. Carve a Pumpkin

Does anyone else cheat and use a stencil to carve their pumpkins?! And they still turn out looking so-so? Haha, good, I’m not alone! It’s not about the final masterpiece though, it’s about the experience! Find a local Pumpkin Patch and pick out the best in the crop! Then spend all afternoon elbow-deep in mucky pumpkin insides. Don’t forget to toast the pumpkin seeds when you are done!

7. Go to a Haunted House

I’m a bit of a scaredy cat when it comes to Haunted Houses. In fact, the only one I can go to is Scarowinds (NC/SC Theme Park).

8. Make a Pie from Scratch

Who doesn’t love warm pie with ice cream?! It’s even more rewarding after baking your own pie and pouring your heart and soul into it. Make a family favorite recipe and surprise your relatives. Or bring it into work and become the new favorite coworker!

9. Write Thanksgiving cards to friends and family

This is one of my favorite Fall activities. Snail Mail is my FAVORITE and I love sending cute cards to friends and family all over the country. Thanksgiving gives you the perfect excuse to write into words why you are thankful for the people in your life.

10. Take a Weekend Getaway to Enjoy the Mountains

The mountains are calling… and I must go! The best place to enjoy the colder weather is in the Mountains with your favorite people. Whether you plan a girls weekend getaway or a couples retreat, the mountains are always fun! Find an Airbnb with that perfect cabin feel overlooking miles of trees changing colors. Bring all your favorite card games and books and snuggle up by the fire enjoying your escape from reality for one weekend.
