Pros & Cons of Renting a Furnished Apartment

Moving can be a very stressful experience especially when you’re in a time crunch. Most of my moves for work have happened within a 2 week time frame. It’s very difficult to pick up your entire life and move within 2 weeks. One of my favorite tips to this quick turnaround is by renting a furnished apartment for a few months during the “transition”. There are definitely pros and cons to renting a furnished apartment – but to me, the pros outweigh the cons! PROS of Renting a Furnished Apartment

Ideal for Quick Moves
This is the number one reason why I consider a furnished apartment. When I have a quick move, I don’t have time to fully research my new destination, pack, and pick up my entire life. Instead, I opt for a furnished apartment and then spend the next few months finding the best neighborhood to live in in my new city. This way, I can focus on the reason for my move (ie job) without the distractions of boxes and clutter.

You can rent for as little as 30 days, with convenience and comfort. Options like this really make careers like travel nurse so much more appealing because the move isn’t as daunting!

Upfront Costs:
Moving is expensive. Whether you hire movers or pack yourself, there are always hidden costs that you don’t expect. Furthermore, once you get into your new apartment, there are always additional items you need to buy to make the space functional. However, if you have a furnished apartment, you know the exact costs going in to it. There are no surprises or hidden fees.

Flexibility & Short Term Rentals:
Furnished Apartments are designed for convenience. That means there is typically a lot of flexibility and the ability to lease short term (instead of 12+ months).

CONS of Renting a Furnished Apartment

Basic/Plain Furniture:
Furnished apartments are meant to appeal to the masses – therefore they aren’t decorated extensively. The basic and plain furniture can be rather dull and uninspiring. If you are someone who likes your own decor and own furniture, this may not be the best option for you.

Storage:
If you already own furniture but haven’t decided where to live or haven’t had time to unpack, you’ll need to purchase storage for your belongings.

Damaging Furniture:
Obviously if you damage any of the furniture provided, you’ll need to pay for it. This can be stressful constantly worrying about an accidental spill or scuff that could cost you tons of money.
